I was commissioned to work with the pre school playgroups in the Calder Valley run by an organisation called Halifax Opportunities Trust. The piece explored the idea of play and memories. The stains and breaks left behind by our children are the reminders of the days we yearn for. It looked at how we try to erase these stains and then years later the same stains that were an annoyance morph into nostalgia.
The children created the cloth during messy play sessions and I used their repetative play motions to embroider the lines on the hanging. I also added embroidery of childrens toys and blocks and even their handprints.
This piece now has a permenant home in Todmorden College, by the children’s centre.
